How does the Express Entry process work?

Express Entry Process
What is the express entry system?

The Express Entry system is an online immigration application management system used by the Canadian government to facilitate the immigration process for skilled workers who wish to become permanent residents of Canada. It was introduced in January 2015 as part of Canada’s efforts to attract and select skilled immigrants who can contribute to the country’s economy.

The Express Entry system manages applications for three main federal economic immigration programs:

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): This program is for skilled workers with foreign work experience who intend to live in any Canadian province or territory outside of Quebec.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): This program is for skilled tradespeople who have work experience in certain occupations and intend to live in any Canadian province or territory outside of Quebec.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC): This program is for individuals with skilled work experience in Canada who wish to become permanent residents.

Here’s an overview of how the Express Entry system works:

  • Determining Eligibility: Prospective applicants first determine their eligibility for one of the three federal economic immigration programs managed through Express Entry: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), or the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). They must meet the minimum eligibility criteria for one of these programs, including factors such as work experience, education, language proficiency, and other criteria.
  • Creating an Online Profile: Eligible candidates create an online Express Entry profile, providing detailed information about their skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other personal details. Upon submission, they receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on these factors.
  • Entering the Express Entry Pool: After creating a profile, candidates are placed into the Express Entry pool along with other eligible applicants. Within the pool, candidates are ranked against each other based on their CRS scores. Profiles remain in the pool for up to 12 months or until the candidate receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
  • Regular Draws and Invitation Rounds: Periodically, the Canadian government conducts Express Entry draws where candidates with the highest CRS scores are issued ITAs. These draws typically occur every two weeks, although the frequency may vary. Candidates who receive an ITA have the opportunity to apply for permanent residence.
  • Receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA): Candidates who are selected in an Express Entry draw and receive an ITA have a limited time (usually 60 days) to submit a complete application for permanent residence. This application must include all required documents, such as police certificates, medical exams, and proof of funds.
  • Submitting a Complete Application: Upon receiving an ITA, candidates must submit a complete application for permanent residence through the online system. This includes providing all necessary supporting documents and paying the applicable fees. Applications are assessed based on Canadian immigration law and regulations.
  • Final Decision and Confirmation of Permanent Residence: After submitting the application, immigration authorities review it to ensure completeness and eligibility. If everything is in order, a final decision is made regarding the candidate’s permanent residence status. If approved, the candidate and their eligible family members (if applicable) will receive confirmation of their permanent residence status.
