1. Skill Assessment

  • Occupation List: Your occupation must be listed on one of the Skilled Occupation Lists (SOL). These lists are updated regularly and include a range of professions in demand in Australia.
  • Relevant Skills and Experience: You must have the necessary qualifications and work experience for your nominated occupation. Your skills will be assessed by a relevant assessing authority.

2. Points-Based System

  • Age: You must be under 45 years of age at the time of your invitation.
  • English Language Proficiency: You need to demonstrate competent English proficiency, typically through tests like IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.
  • Work Experience: Points are awarded based on your work experience in your nominated occupation. Both Australian and overseas work experience are considered.
  • Education: Points are given for your educational qualifications, such as a diploma, degree, or trade qualification.
  • Other Factors: Additional points can be earned for factors such as Australian study requirements, professional year in Australia, or a state or territory nomination.

3. Expression of Interest (EOI)

  • You need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect system. This EOI provides information about your skills, qualifications, and experience.
  • Based on your EOI, you may be invited to apply for a visa if you meet the points threshold and other requirements.

4. Visa Options

  • Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189): This visa does not require sponsorship and is suitable for skilled workers who meet the points test.
  • Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190): This visa requires nomination by an Australian state or territory government.
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491): This visa is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia and requires nomination by a state or territory government or sponsorship by an eligible family member.

5. Health and Character Requirements

  • Health Assessment: You must meet certain health standards, which may include a medical examination.
  • Character Assessment: You need to provide police certificates and meet character requirements.
