Japan introduces e-Visa for Indian tourists: From eligibility criteria to application process, here’s a complete guide

Japan Travel Visa

Japan has recently launched an e-Visa program tailored specifically for Indian tourists, streamlining the process of obtaining a visa for travel to this captivating destination. The e-Visa initiative offers a convenient and efficient way for Indian travelers to explore Japan’s rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant cities.

To be eligible for the e-Visa, Indian tourists must meet certain criteria outlined by the Japanese government. This typically includes requirements such as possessing a valid passport with a minimum validity period, providing proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses during the stay, and demonstrating an intention to return to India after the visit.

The program began in India on April 1. Under this e-Visa program, Indian tourists no longer need to carry a physical passport to enter Japan. The program is also available for travellers from Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The application process for the e-Visa is straightforward and user-friendly. Travelers can complete the entire process online, eliminating the need for in-person visits to consulates or visa centers. Applicants will need to fill out a digital application form, providing accurate and up-to-date information about their travel plans, personal details, and background. Additionally, they may be required to upload supporting documents such as passport scans, photographs, and proof of accommodation.

Here's are the application process for a tourist visa in Japan:

Step 1. To initiate the application, individuals must visit the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre managed by VFS Global at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/

Step 2: Click on the ‘Temporary Visitor Visa’ option. Download the visa application form and fill it out accurately. Take a printout and ensure that all required fields are filled.

Step 3: Book an appointment to submit your application form at the Visa Application Centre. You will get an appointment confirmation email containing the letter of appointment.

Step 4: Present the completed visa application form at the centre during your appointment. Wait for an email notification indicating when your decision is ready for collection. Track the visa application status online using the reference number from the invoice or receipt

Step 5: During the check-in at the airport, display the “visa issuance notice” on your device. The travel agency will provide you with a “Visa Issuance Notice” which contains a two-dimensional barcode. Scan the barcode and type all the necessary details to access the notice. Click on ‘Display’ to view the electronic “visa issuance notice.

As part of the application procedure, individuals intending to travel to Japan may be asked to personally attend an interview at the appropriate Japanese overseas office responsible for their residential area. By meeting the specified requirements, Indian tourists can enjoy a smooth travel process to Japan with a tourist e-Visa, which remains valid for a duration of 90 days.
